Located in the Northeast part of Ukraine, Kharkov, or Kharkiv, is the second largest city in the country with a population of approximately 1.5 million people. A Ukrainian Cossack (member of a military community) founded Kharkov in 1654 and the city has since evolved into one of the nation’s largest commercial and cultural centers.

Kharkov is home to hundreds of industrial companies, most of which specialize in industrial machinery. Morozov Design Bureau, Malyshev Tank Factory, Harton, and Turboatom are all headquartered here. The city is also home to 13 national universities as well as a number of other education and research institutions.

Visitors to Kharkov will find much to do. The city has a circus, six professional theatres, several libraries and museums, and over 100 parks, all within city limits. A wide variety of nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, markets, and historical attractions also attract visitors. Major tourist attractions include Freedom Square, the Memorial Complex, the Taras Shevchenko Monument and Gardens, the Militia Museum, the Children’s Railway, Assumption Cathedral, Protection of the Virgin Cathedral, and many more.
