World’s First Liliger Born in Russian Zoo

19. September 2012 by Dasha 0 Comments

Kiara, the world’s first liliger, was born at Russia’s Novosibirsk Zoo last month, and mother and baby are doing fine. A liliger, for those not hip to animal crossbreeding, is a mix between a lion and a liger (lion crossed with tiger).

“This cub has just started growing and developing, though her character has not even formed yet,” zookeeper Roza Solovyova told Reuters. “But I’m confident she will be a calm, confident, strong animal.”

Oddly enough, Kiara’s liger mother, Zita, was unable to produce enough milk for her cub, so Kiara is being raised by an ordinary domestic cat named Dasha.

The liliger cub is currently under quarantine, though the zoo plans to put her on display next month.
