World Health Officials Report no Ukraine Swine Flu Mutation

17. November 2009 by Daniel 0 Comments

As the Ukrainian government continues to impose drastic measures to stop the spread of swine flu in the country, a team from the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Tuesday that there is no evidence that the virus had mutated.

WHO officials became concerned about a possible mutation of the disease after Ukrainian authorities reported what appeared to be an unusually high number of swine flu cases in the country.  British scientists had also reported that post-mortem examinations of two swine flu victims showed indications that the virus may have mutated.

However, the WHO found no such evidence and also noted that the rate of flu cases in Ukraine is about equal with the rate of cases in Russia and other nearby countries. Still Ukraine has ordered schools to be closed and restricted regional travel in an effort to stop the spread of the flu.

Some observers have accused Ukrainian politicians of exaggerating the swine flu threat for political purposes. For more on the swine flu situation in Ukraine, see this previous blog post.
