"Brighton Beach" Among Lifetime’s Reality Lineup

4. May 2011 by Christy 0 Comments

Today Lifetime announced its 2011-2012 programming slate and Brighton Beach, a reality show about Russian and Ukrainian men and women living in New York City's “Little Odessa,” is among the network’s upcoming lineup.

According to the announcement, Brighton Beach will consist of 12 half-hour episodes which follow “the colorful women and men who live, love, and work in the famous Brooklyn neighborhood, home to a vibrant Russian-American community where viewers will meet the multi-generational families whose dramas and dreams contend with their Russian heritage.” No word on exactly when the show will air other than sometime in 2011 or 2012.

Though many Brighton Beach residents opposed the new show, fearing it would depict Russians as “vodka-drinking ethnic caricatures,” much like MTV’s Jersey Shore plays up Italian stereotypes, Lifetime claims Brighton Beach will be a far cry from Jersey Shore. Residents first grew concerned in March 2010, after creators of Brighton Beach said the show would feature “plenty of vodka, techno music, and guys wearing Adidas pants” plus lots of “hot, decked out Russian girls” and perhaps even a mail order bride. However, it seems that Lifetime has decided to tone down the original concept.
