Climb High Castle Hill for Panoramic Views

16. January 2012 by Masha 0 Comments

Surrounded by a lush park, a few small shops, and a restaurant, this 413-meter hill towers above the city of Lviv. Make sure you and your Ukrainian girl have good walking shoes on and prepare to hike about 30-minutes up 300 steps to reach the summit.

An observation deck with a high flying Ukrainian flag awaits and rewards you with breathtaking views of the entire city.

The hill was named after the castle that long stood at the top. It was constructed in 1360 by King Kazimierz of Poland. For centuries it served as a garrison, a treasury, and a prison dungeon. It is believed to have many tunnels which still exist today deep underground. All that is left of the castle aboveground is one part of a wall.

Also at the top of High Castle Hill is a mound built in 1869 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Union of Lublin. There are other monuments hidden all around the park. Several winding walkways will give you a complete tour. Check out these photos!
