Fun Things to Do in Kerch: Have a Flocking Good Time with Ostriches

7. October 2009 by James 0 Comments

No visit to Kerch, Ukraine, would be complete without a trip to see some funky feathered friends: ostriches.

These quick but odd birds were first brought to the area in April 2004. The farm sits near the outskirts of Kerch and has more than 50 ostriches on 10 hectares of land. Valued for their soft fashionable feathers by Ukrainian and Russian women, and their lean healthy meat, ostriches are not native to the region. None the less, they have adapted quite well to the Crimean climate and native vegetation. Contrary to popular belief when threatened, it does not bury its head in the sand. The ostrich actually will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or will run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick from its powerful legs and pick with its powerful beak.

The farm also features other domestic livestock such as rabbits, pigs, peacocks, pheasants, owls and donkeys.

While at the farm be sure to visit the onsite restaurant.  With a warm, cozy and comfortable atmosphere guest can select from a delicious menu full of farm fresh produce, ostrich eggs and meat, and other cuisine cooked to order. There is also an onsite store where you can purchase farm products and produce to take home with you.
