Russian Women Celebrate Flag Day Today

22. August 2012 by Masha 0 Comments

As you log on to HotRussianBrides.com today, find out how your favorite Russian girls are honoring their country's flag. While the white, blue, and red tricolor flag is over 300 years old, it was in 1994 that Boris Yeltsin chose today's date as National Flag Day to commemorate the coup attempt of August 22, 1991.

But what do the colors mean?

"It is unknown what the colors of the Russian national flag symbolize. All attempts to explain it are just heraldic poetry," Georgi Vilinbakhov, Chairman of the Heraldry Council, told The Voice of Russia.

When the flag first appeared at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, when Russia was becoming a powerful state, the three colors received their first official interpretation. White was the color of freedom and independence, blue symbolized the Virgin Mary, the holy protectress of Russia, and red stood for the great power of statehood.

Today, the following unofficial interpretation is used: white means peace, blue is the color of faith and fidelity, while red symbolizes force and blood shed for the Motherland.

Russian brides may believe in different meanings for their country's flag so find a few to chat with and you could have some interesting cultural conversations.
