Russian Women Dominate Chicago Marathon

This weekend at the Chicago Marathon, for the second year in a row, a Russian woman once again proved that Russian women are more than just a pretty face.


Lila Shobukhova won the Chicago marathon, which is considered one of the most elite marathons in the world. Shobukhova finished with a time of 2:25:56 on a cold blustery morning, pulling away from the pack about 1.8 miles from the finish. She beat second place finisher, Germany’s Irina Mikitenko by 36 seconds. Last year’s winner, fellow Russian Lidia Grigorieva took third.


While Russian women dominated the ladies field, the Kenyans’ once again dominated the men’s competition.  Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru ran a fast pace and won the race in record time in just 2:05:41. With his victory, Wanjiru took home $75,000 for being the overall winner and additional $100,000 for breaking the course record.


Lila can add the Chicago trophy to other medals in her collection including silver medals at the 2006 World Indoor Champions and European Championships. Last year at 2008 Russian Championships she set a new European 5000 m record of 14:23.75, to become the fourth fastest in history. She was a member of the 2008 Russian Olympic team.
